The old saying “there are no coincidences” occurred at a nearby retailer last weekend.

While finishing my Christmas decoration shopping with the “help” of my young grandchildren, I was contending with the typical check out aisle distractions of them in perpetual motion reaching for candy and other items catching their wandering eyes, and hands. The woman in front of me, who I guessed to be about my age, chuckled and gave me an empathetic look “My kids were the same way.” She said, and we struck up a conversation.

What she shared next brought us both to tears.

As she placed a box containing a light show projector on the conveyor belt she said, “Believe it or not, last year someone stole one of these off my front lawn! It broke my heart”, she said, “Because watching those lights brought such joy to my grandson who has Autism.” I felt my own heart melt, but then soar knowing the value of The Bridge Center programs for children with Autism.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she explained why her grandson had come to live with her. Her greatest wish was for her grandson to actually look at her. “Have you heard about The Bridge Center?” I asked. The emotion in her eyes was instant as we chatted about The Bridge Center and how our programs could be a resource to help. We chatted for a few minutes and she thanked me profusely as she took my card and hugged me goodbye.

This “chance” meeting made me reflect about the many other grandmothers, fathers, mothers, and caregivers who have a special needs family member and how much they too would benefit from The Bridge Center’s therapeutic recreational and equine programs.

At The Bridge Center, no individual is ever turned away, whether they can afford to pay or not. Our innovative programs are designed to meet the social, emotional and physical goals of each individual participant. Our core values lie in the belief that all participants CAN PLAY, LEARN, AND GROW. Staff, volunteers, and parents have experienced many “firsts” … words spoken, true laughter and yes, even a child actually looking into the eyes of a loved one.

Your gift boosts the availability of The Bridge Centers programs that truly transform lives, for both the participant and their family.

  • A gift of $35 will enable a child to attend a “Social Adventures” program.
  • A gift of $55 will cover the cost of a THERAPEUTIC RIDING LESSON
  • A gift of $75 will pay for a session of “Sensory Science”
  • A gift of $600 will enable a disadvantaged child to attend SUMMER CAMP.

So please, give a gift that is as generous as you can afford.

Wishing you and those you love a peaceful and joyful holiday!

I was very impressed at how thorough the communication is! I loved to see the reports and/or feedback about my son’s day each week. It feels great to talk with him specifically about his experiences. If there are any incidents that occurred while at camp, I was always well informed.
